How to Buy Solar + Storage Without Hidden Costs: A Siemens-Focused Procurement Checklist

If you're a small business putting together a solar-plus-storage system, this is the checklist I wish someone had handed me before I started buying equipment. Step 1: Size the Load Before You Size the Panels

The first mistake is looking at panel wattage. In my experience, most buyers focus on per-watt pricing and completely miss the monitoring infrastructure. If you can't measure what the building is actually using, you can't size the battery storage bin correctly. You'll either overspend on capacity or undersize it and watch the inverter trip.

That is where the current transformer comes in. A current transformer (CT) clamps around a conductor and steps the current down to a level a meter can read. It sounds like a small detail, but it's the difference between a system that makes sense and one that's just expensive. The Siemens current transformer I used on a 2024 warehouse project was specified to IEC 61869-2, the standard for current transformers for measuring and protective applications. When you ask for a quote, say this: show me the battery storage bin as a separate line item, and show me the labor hours to mount it. If the vendor can't do that, you haven't got a comparable quote. Yes, there are wind turbines in the ocean, and they feed the high-voltage grid. Those offshore wind turbines are built on a much bigger scale than rooftop solar, and they require high-voltage transmission infrastructure. There are offshore wind farms in the North Sea, off the U.S. East Coast, and across Asia. But those are utility-scale projects. You can't buy one on a store checkout. What you can do is find out whether your local utility has an interconnection queue, net metering rules, or a demand charge that affects how your battery storage bin gets dispatched.

That grid connection research is part of your budget. In 2024, I needed interconnection rules for a microgrid study. One utility gave us everything for free. First, don't assume a higher price means better quality. People think expensive vendors deliver better quality. Actually, vendors who deliver quality can charge more. The causation runs the other way. Price is a signal, not a promise.

Second, get written confirmation for every deadline, even with a vendor you trust. I knew I should have gotten written confirmation on a commissioning date, but I thought “we've worked together for years.” That was the one time the verbal agreement got forgotten. It cost us a week of delay and a penalty on our own contract.

Third, if you're buying for a small project, don't let a vendor make you feel like a nuisance. A good supplier understands that today's $200 order might be next year's $20,000 order. The vendors who took our small orders seriously are the ones we still use for the big ones.
